What is Helium (HNT)?

Helium is a decentralized wireless network infrastructure powered by blockchain technology. It enables Internet of Things (IoT) devices—such as smart meters, GPS trackers, and sensors—to connect and transmit data globally without reliance on centralized, traditional mobile network providers.

How does it work?

Helium operates as “The People’s Network.” Instead of centralized towers, the network is built by individuals.

  • Hotspots: Users install physical devices called Hotspots that provide wireless coverage to their local area.
  • Incentives: Participants earn HNT tokens as rewards for providing network coverage.
  • Utility: HNT acts as both a mining reward and a utility token used to pay for network data transfer services.

What makes it unique?

Helium’s infrastructure relies on LongFi, a proprietary protocol combining LoRaWAN wireless technology with the Helium blockchain. This setup ensures long-range, low-power data transmission ideal for IoT. The network utilizes a Proof-of-Coverage (PoC) consensus mechanism, which algorithmically verifies that Hotspots are legitimately providing the wireless coverage they claim, ensuring network integrity and reliability without requiring high-energy computation.

Project Origins and Outlook

Founded in 2019 by Amir Haleem, Shawn Fanning, and Sean Carey, Helium introduced a new model for telecommunications infrastructure. By decentralizing the physical hardware layer, the project lowered the barriers to establishing global connectivity. While market volatility remains a factor, the network continues to facilitate infrastructure for millions of IoT devices, with long-term projections estimating continued evolution in valuation through 2033.
